Who is Princess Aurora/Briar Rose?
Princess Aurora is the titular character of the classic fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty. Earlier versions of the story give her different names; Basile's Sole, Luna e Talia calls her Talia; Perceforest names her Zellandine; and Brynhild in the Volsunga saga.
The tale was first published by Charles Perrault in 1697 as La Belle au bois dormat. At the christening of a young princess, three fairies are invited to bestow gifts upon on the baby. Unfortunately, the joyous occasion is disrupted by an evil fairy, angry that she was uninvited to the event. She curses the princess to prick her finger on a spindle and die upon reaching womanhood. The other good fairies are unable to reverse the enchantment, but instead alter it so that the princess will fall into a hundred year sleep until awakened by true love's first kiss.
The princess grows up and despite precautions taken by her father, the king, she does prick her finger on a spindle and falls into a deep sleep. After a hundred years, a prince fights his way into the castle which has a forest of briars around it. He kisses the princess, who awakens.
The Brothers Grimm later added the name Briar Rose in their version, published in 1812.
In 1959, Disney's Sleeping Beauty premiered in theatres, and it is this version of the story and its main character that this website is dedicated to. This incarnation is based largely on Tchaikovsky's ballet, first performed in 1890.
In the Disney movie version, the young princess is named Aurora "after the dawn, for she filled their lives with sunshine" after many childless years. After the enchantment, she is taken away to be raised by the good fairies as a peasant girl, renamed Briar Rose, to be returned to her parents after her sixteenth birthday once the danger from evil Maleficent's curse has passed.
